Story updated

The story in brief

30-second read

Luke Chadwick recalls his Manchester United debut, 27 years on to the exact day. Sir Alex Ferguson was heavily criticised as a combination of Manchester United youngsters and fringe players were eliminated from the Worthington Cup, which is now known as the Carabao Cup .

Aston Villa won the third-round tie 3-0 after fielding a full-strength side, with goals from Julian Joachim, Ian Taylor and substitute Steve Stone. It saw John Gregory guide his team into a fourth-round clash against Southampton.

The result meant United were out of both domestic cups by the second week of October. There was no FA Cup football as United concentrated on the World Cup Championship.
