Arteta wants Arsenal to make more of their attacking promise

Story updated

The story in brief

35-second read

Mikel Arteta believes Arsenal need to improve their finishing, but he is broadly happy with the chances his side are creating this season. According to FBREF data, the Gunners rank midtable in the Premier League for shots, with 30 of their 78 attempts hitting the target.

They have scored 10 goals, the fifth-highest total in the division, at a rate of 0.13 goals per shot. Those numbers suggest their finishing is hardly disastrous, particularly given the goals have dried up from set pieces, previously such a reliable source.

Even so, their struggle to put games to bed continues to make life tense in the stands. Three of Arsenal’s five league wins have come by a single goal, while a stoppage-time penalty added some gloss to the victory at Sunderland.
