How Greed and Money Became the Defining Factors in Football

The story in brief

32-second read

A billionaire was once quoted as saying, “I want my fair share, and that is all of it.” This World Cup year, football fans came face to face with a blatant exercise of that quote.

The tournament itself was revealed as what it was: a trial run for printing money. Money, it happens, was never the root of evil. It was marked with heavy-handed advertising, delusions of grandeur, a touch of undue influence, celebrity culture, political statements and obscenely expensive tickets.

Moreover, we saw some things for the first time. Water breaks, covered logos in stadiums and Gianni Infantino hopping from city to city on his private jet every two hours or so, climate change be damned.
