Chelsea midfielder Valentin Barco has played alongside notable Argentina teammates, including Lionel Messi and Lautaro Martinez, and would like to team up with one of them at Chelsea. Barco was asked who he would like Chelsea to sign, and he suggested Cristian Romero, also known as 'Cuti'. Romero is a central defender who left Tottenham Hotspur for Atletico Madrid during the summer.
Romero has a poor record against Chelsea, having lost six out of eight games and being sent off against them. Gary Neville was surprised Chelsea didn't sign Romero in the summer as they looked for a new centre-half. Instead, Chelsea signed Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace for £52m, who is now injured and set to miss the rest of 2026.
Chelsea was reportedly interested in signing Romero, along with other clubs like Inter Milan, Barcelona, and Arsenal, before he joined Atletico Madrid. Signing Romero would have been challenging due to Chelsea's rivalry with Tottenham, but relations between the two clubs have improved, with players moving in both directions.

Source context
Chelsea midfielder Valentin Barco has had the privilege of playing alongside some incredible players in the Argentina national team. Since becoming a full Argentina international, Barco has shared the pitch with the legendary Lionel Messi, Julian Alvarez and Lautaro Martinez, just to name a few of his high-profile teammates. Argentina are a very talented side who reached the World Cup final in the summer, and Barco would love to line up alongside one of their current stars at club level. Barco was recently asked who he would request Chelsea’s owners to sign if he were in a position to do that. In response, he told journalist Gaston Edul on his YouTube channel “Cuti”, referring to Cristian Romero.
