He began his officiating career in his native Australia, refereeing in the A-League from 2010 to 2019. It was in 2019 that he moved to English football and began refereeing in the EFL, but it wasn't long before he'd be promoted to the top flight.
Between 2013 to 2019 he was a FIFA-listed referee for the Australian FA, and returned to the list in 2023, now representing England's FA. Gillett will have the whistle in his hand when Villa travel to St James' Park on Saturday, and that will fill Unai Emery with confidence.
