Milan had struggled in Europe, losing two of their first three games. The loss came despite Milan's confidence boost from a 3-1 Derby della Madonnina victory.
Ferencvaros dominated the game, with Kristoffer Zachariassen and Lenny Joseph causing Milan problems. Milan's third-choice goalkeeper Lorenzo Torriani made several saves, including a tough one on Joseph's angled drive. Ruben Amorim made a triple substitution at halftime, introducing Christian Pulisic, Diego Moreira, and Mario Gila.
Ferencvaros scored on counter-attacks, with Joseph's first goal coming after Torriani's heavy touch and the second on a rapid counter-attack. Milan tried to take advantage of Ferencvaros going down to 10 men after Bamidele Yusuf's red card, but Denes Dibusz made a crucial save to deny Omari Hutchinson. Ferencvaros nearly scored a third in stoppages.
