From the source

In Lewis Carroll’s Through the Looking-Glass, Alice races behind the Red Queen until she is utterly exhausted. When they finally stop, she discovers that they have barely moved.

Perplexed, she asks the Queen why. In her strange world, the Queen explains, it takes all the running you can manage just to stay in the same place.

Evolutionary biologist Leigh Van Valen later borrowed this phenomenon for what he called his Red Queen hypothesis. The idea is simple: improvement does not guarantee an advantage when everyone around you is improving too.
