A new statistical analysis has highlighted just how much Tottenham Hotspur’s midfield has improved following the summer arrivals of Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes. The pair faced criticism over their combined £185m price tag earlier this season, but their recent performances have coincided with a significant upturn in Tottenham’s results.

New figures suggest the biggest improvement has come in the side’s ability to progress the ball and create opportunities from midfield. Tonali and Fernandes have become an important part of Roberto De Zerbi’s plans, with Spurs winning three consecutive Premier League matches.

The partnership has offered Tottenham a different balance in the middle of the pitch, although the team’s recent improvement cannot be attributed to those two players alone.
