From the source

Aston Villa have built their midfield around control, energy and experience under Unai Emery, with Boubacar Kamara protecting the defence, Youri Tielemans directing possession and Amadou Onana adding physical strength.

Ross Barkley offers something different, and that’s composure in tight spaces and the ability to help Villa manage matches when opponents increase the pressure. The 32-year-old has made 14 appearances across all competitions in 2026/27, scoring four goals and providing two assists.

He has also made four Premier League starts, giving Emery another option during a demanding schedule that includes Champions League football. Although John McGinn provides further midfield cover, Barkley brings experience and composure that could prove valuable during the closing stages of tight matches.
