Jamie Carragher believes Manchester United missed an opportunity by not signing a player who joined Tottenham Hotspur in the summer. Carragher was impressed by Mateus Fernandes' performance for West Ham last season and thinks Manchester United should have signed him. Fernandes has since shown strong form for Tottenham, particularly in a match against Chelsea. He delivered a masterclass alongside Sandro Tonali, breaking up play and showing great technique.
Fernandes started in his preferred number six role against Chelsea and delivered impressive stats, including 121 touches, 91 accurate passes out of 99, and 5 tackles, the most in the match for each category. He also made 19 line-breaking passes and 6 penalty area entries, demonstrating his skill and influence on the game. Carragher praised Fernandes, stating that he looked class for West Ham and finally looked the part in a Tottenham shirt.
Carragher suggested that Manchester United should have signed Fernandes instead of some of their other midfielders. Many Manchester United fans initially criticized Tottenham for overpaying for Tonali and Fernandes but now prefer the Tottenham duo over United's signings. Tottenham's decision to invest in top targets is now paying off, while United are struggling with their cheaper signings.

Source context
Jamie Carragher believes Man United missed a trick by not signing a player who arrived at Tottenham Hotspur in the summer window. Spurs made wholesale changes to their squad in the summer, bringing 10 new players through the door to completely overhaul the squad in a single window. After Tottenham’s poor start to the season, many pundits were questioning Spurs’ summer transfer business, suggesting that Roberto De Zerbi’s side had overpaid for many of their players. However, many of the club’s new arrivals are now coming into their own, and two of them, whom the club paid a combined £185m for, showed at Stamford Bridge exactly why they cost top dollar.
