Think about a José Mourinho’s press appearance for a moment. Which ones do you remember? The “I am a special one”, surely. “Respect, respect, respect,” and the football heritage speech at Manchester United.
“Por qué, por qué?” at Real Madrid. These clips have followed him everywhere. Now think of Mourinho explaining a football match. There is a remarkable clarity to him when he talks about what a player saw, why a defender moved or where the space opened up.
Yet those explanations rarely enjoy the afterlife of his confrontations. We have spent years replaying Mourinho the provocateur, giving considerably less attention to Mourinho the coach.
