Varela has scored nine Serie A goals, the most in the league, and has 12 contributions in 10 games this season. The 21-year-old joined Monza from Benfica B for £1.6m and up to €1.2m in add-ons. His prolific form has attracted interest from multiple top clubs.
Both Tottenham and Chelsea were reportedly present at Monza's match against Bologna, scouting Varela. The London duo face competition from Arsenal, who have been impressed by the Portuguese forward, as well as other clubs including Newcastle United, Brighton, and several top European teams. Monza may struggle to retain Varela due to their poor form and relegation risk.
Varela's transfer valuation is reportedly around £4m according to Transfermarkt. Both Chelsea and Tottenham are hoping to sign him at a relatively modest fee. Monza would prefer to keep Varela for another season but may find it difficult due to their current struggles and the growing interest from top European clubs.

Source context
Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea are closely monitoring prolific Monza forward Gustavo Varela ahead of a possible transfer, according to TEAMtalk. Several footballers have been signed for relatively modest fees, gone on to make a significant impact and eventually commanded much higher transfer fees. In recent seasons, we have seen players such as Arsenal’s Viktor Gyökeres make that journey, moving from Brighton & Hove Albion to Coventry City, where he scored 40 goals across his final two seasons before joining Sporting CP for a club-record fee. Moises Caicedo, Andy Robertson and Marcus Thuram are other notable active players who fit that category, with all three now playing important roles for their respective clubs.
