Chelsea's Carabao Cup loss to Liverpool may force a change in their transfer plans, particularly in regards to signing a new central defender, according to The Chelsea Chronicle. The Blues lost 6-5 on penalties after a 1-1 draw. Xabi Alonso's side had previously lost to Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League.
Wesley Fofana's performance was unconvincing, giving away a penalty and missing a crucial spot-kick. He has been inconsistent and injury-prone since joining Chelsea from Leicester City in 2022 for £70m. Fofana has lost his starting spot to Josh Acheampong but may regain it due to Maxence Lacroix's injury.
Chelsea's defensive issues extend beyond Fofana, with the team conceding 1.9 goals per match and making 4.1 saves per game in the Premier League. They have conceded six set-piece goals and have a higher actual goal tally than expected. The club needs to identify and address underlying problems before recruiting a new defender.

Source context
Xabi Alonso and Chelsea had another night to forget on Wednesday as they crashed out of the Carabao Cup. The Blues lost 6-5 to Liverpool on penalties at Anfield after the fourth round tie ended 1-1. It comes after Alonso’s side lost 2-0 to Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League. For some, it was just a cup game. They will not want to read too much into it. However, there were some performances from that match that simply cannot be overlooked and should force Chelsea to act in the transfer window when it opens in January.
