Newcastle United lost 3-1 to Everton in the League Cup fourth round, with the hosts being ruthlessly efficient in registering three goals from five shots on target. The match was played at Everton's new stadium, which has excellent sight lines but poor toilet facilities. Newcastle had more possession, shots, and touches in the opposition box, but failed to capitalize on their chances. Everton's first goal came when Dedic was dispossessed by George, leading to Garner scoring.

Newcastle had several chances to score before Everton opened their account, including a header from Barnes saved by Pickford and a blocked effort from Murphy. Osula had a promising chance, but Tarkowski made a last-ditch block. After Everton took the lead, they doubled their score on the stroke of half-time through Hackney. Newcastle made substitutions at halftime, introducing Joelinton, Wissa, and Elanga, but still struggled to score.

Everton sealed their win with a third goal, Barry scoring from a Dewsbury-Hall cross, after which there was no way back for Newcastle. Burn scored a consolation goal in the 88th minute. The loss was frustrating for Newcastle, as they had been expecting to reach the League Cup semi-final with a win. The match statistics showed Newcastle dominated possession and shots, but Everton were more efficient in front of goal.

How we label and update stories

Source context

This was my first visit to Everton’s new stadium, the sizeable away allocation for this League Cup fourth round tie affording me the opportunity to travel to Liverpool with the lad and the NUSC, stopping off pre-match at Rossett Park, home of Marine FC for pints and curry, which was spot on. Granted, the Hill Dickinson has a bleak outlook given its location down on the docks, but the sight lines inside the stadium are excellent. What isn’t so good are the toilet facilities, queuing forever to take position at one of only six urinals! I noticed that ‘Nil Satus Nisi Optimum’ is emblazoned on the tunnel wall, which loosely translated means United’s second visit to this dockyard arena was to end in tears.
