From the source

Roy Keane was in line for a sensational return to Manchester United as assistant manager if Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had been appointed interim boss following Ruben Amorim’s dismissal in January.

According to The Sun, United’s chiefs interviewed both Solskjaer and Michael Carrick for the interim job after sacking Amorim. Solskjaer was considering bringing Keane back to the club as his assistant.

However, Carrick eventually won the race and led United to third place in the Premier League. That performance earned him the permanent job, effectively ending any chance of seeing Solskjaer and Keane reunite at Old Trafford.
