Barcelona have reached one of those awkward moments that define modern elite football, a moment where need collides with finances and sentiment gives way to ruthless squad planning.

According to Record, the Catalan club are looking to strengthen central defence and that search may come at the cost of Alejandro Balde. The story says plenty about where Hansi Flick sees his squad.

Pau Cubarsí and Gerard Martín are the established pairing in the middle, Andreas Christensen is the direct alternative, and concern around the Dane’s fitness record has sharpened the urgency for another centre-back.
