Harry Kane made history by winning the 2026 Ballon d’Or. For the first time since 1981, the Golden Ball has gone to a Bayern Munich player.
But the Englishman’s triumph is far more than just a personal honor. The German record champions, too, can consider themselves big winners. With his success, Kane has disproved a persistent prejudice: that players in the Bundesliga are at a decisive disadvantage when it comes to being voted the world’s best soccer player.
In recent decades, the Munich club has repeatedly seen the outstanding performances of its stars go unrewarded with the Ballon d’Or. Franck Ribéry (2013), Manuel Neuer (2014), and Robert Lewandowski (2021) are among the most prominent examples.
