A combination of shocking decision making by the referee and woeful defending gifted the visitors the lead. However, this wasn’t out of keeping with what Newcastle United fans had watched in the previous 48 minutes.

A laboured United team huffed and puffed and managed to make Everton almost look like a decent team. The 49th minute saw the killer blow but the half-time whistle had already seen the Newcastle United fans deliver their own appraisal of what they were witnessing.
